What Is Salt Nicotine? The Complete Guide to Nic Salts

Salt nicotine is nicotine that has been combined with an acid to form a nicotine salt. Nicotine is a weak base. In its unbound freebase form it has a sharp, peppery bite at higher strengths. Add a weak organic acid and most of the nicotine becomes protonated, a form the UK Committee on Toxicity describes as less harsh and bitter on inhalation.

It is the same nicotine molecule either way. What changes is its chemical form, and with it the feel of each puff. That is the reason salt e-liquids exist: they let a small pod system deliver a strength that would feel rough as freebase.

The word “salt” is chemistry, not table salt. An acid plus a base forms a salt, and nicotine is the base.

Who nic salts suit

Salt e-liquids suit adults who want a firm, satisfying draw from a compact device, including many people switching from cigarettes, closed pods or disposables. If you prefer big clouds from a sub-ohm tank, freebase nicotine is the better match.

Nic salts are made by adding a weak acid to nicotine before it is blended into the e-liquid base. The acid lowers the liquid’s pH. Nicotine has a pKa of about 8.0, so as the pH drops below that point, more of it shifts into the protonated form.

How much of the nicotine converts depends on the acid and the amount used. A 2018 lab study of e-liquids measured the share left in freebase form ranging from 3% to 84% across products, which is one reason two salt e-liquids at the same strength can feel different.

The modern approach traces back to a patent filed in 2014 by Adam Bowen and Chenyue Xing and granted to Juul Labs in December 2015. It describes nicotine salt formulations made with acids such as benzoic, salicylic and levulinic acid. Today you will find nic salts in many closed pods, disposables and refillable salt e-liquids.

A common follow-up question is whether 20 mg of salt equals 20 mg of freebase. The label states the same concentration, but the experience is not identical. We walk through the evidence in is 20 mg salt nicotine the same as 20 mg freebase.

Nicotine strength is shown either in milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml) or as a percentage, and 1% is roughly 10 mg/ml. A 5% pod is about 50 mg/ml, and a 3% salt is about 30 mg/ml.

Some manufacturers state percent by weight rather than by volume, so the two figures do not always line up exactly. Treat the conversion as a close guide.

To see how much nicotine a whole bottle holds, multiply the strength by the volume. A 30 ml bottle at 30 mg/ml holds about 900 mg of nicotine, which is why caps stay closed and bottles stay out of reach of children and pets.

Match your intake, not the label. More vapor per puff means you need a lower strength for the same intake, so the right number depends on your device as much as on what you used before.

The number on a bottle tells you how much nicotine is in each milliliter of liquid. How much of it reaches you depends on how much liquid your device turns into vapor with every puff. A tight-draw pod at 1.0 to 1.2 ohm vaporizes only a little, so it suits a higher strength. A pod at 0.8 ohm or lower makes more vapor, so the same bottle feels stronger and you should start lower. That is why the table below starts with your device, then what you use now.

Find your starting strength

How to read the table: pick the row for the device you will use, then the column for the closed pod you use today. If you run a Vaporesso XROS 5 Mini with a 1.0 or 1.2 ohm pod, read the first row. With a 0.8 ohm XROS pod, read the second. If you are not sure what your current pod is, check the box or the pod itself: most closed pods print the strength as a percentage.

Why we start one step below your closed pod

A refillable pod with a mesh coil usually makes more vapor per puff than a closed pod, so the same percentage tends to feel stronger and harsher than people expect. Starting one step lower and moving up if you need to is easier than starting too high. Salts also feel smooth at high strengths, which makes it easy to take in more nicotine than you mean to.

• Coming from JUUL? Start one step down in the Aspire Nexi Pro: 5% becomes 3% salt, and 3% becomes 2% salt.
• Using a sub-ohm tank or a pod above about 20 W? Salt nicotine is not the right fit. Use the low-strength freebase options in the table instead.

Dial it in over your first few days

1. Start where the table points youBegin at the suggested strength with the airflow at its tightest setting.
2. Take slow, steady puffsSalts are made for a gentle mouth-to-lung draw. Draw into your mouth first, then inhale, rather than taking long lung hits.
3. Give it two or three daysYour first day is rarely a reliable guide. Notice how often you reach for the device over a few normal days.
4. Change one thing at a timeAdjust strength, airflow or puff length separately, so you can tell which change made the difference.

Signs your strength needs adjusting

• Feels light: if you are reaching for it far more often than before after two or three days, move up one strength.
• Feels too strong: a sharp catch in the throat or a harsh, peppery hit means the strength or the airflow is too much for your draw. Step down one strength, close the airflow a little or take shorter puffs.
• Lightheaded, dizzy or queasy: these are signs of too much nicotine. Stop for a while and step down a strength before your next session.

Use nic salts in a low-power pod system with a mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw, typically with a coil of about 0.8 ohm or higher. These devices run at modest wattage and vaporize a small amount of liquid per puff, which suits the higher strengths salts come in.

Avoid sub-ohm tanks and high-wattage mods. They vaporize far more liquid per puff, so a 20 to 50 mg/ml salt delivers much more nicotine than intended and feels harsh. In those setups, use a low-strength freebase instead.

What to look for in a salt nic device

• Coil resistance of 0.8 ohm or higher. Higher resistance means lower power and less vapor per puff. Pods at 1.0 to 1.2 ohm give the tightest draw and suit higher salt strengths.
• A mouth-to-lung draw. You pull vapor into your mouth first, then inhale, much like drawing on a cigarette. A tighter airflow setting suits higher strengths.
• Draw activation. All three devices below fire when you inhale, so there is no button to hold.
• Battery and pod size. Battery size decides how often you charge. Pod size decides how often you refill.

Choosing a flavored salt strength

Flavored brands use slightly different numbers from our 20, 30 and 50 mg/ml. Treat 24 to 28 mg/ml as the lower step, a little above 2%. Treat 48 to 50 mg/ml as the full 5% step, the same strength as a 5% closed pod. Juice Head and Twist also offer 35 mg/ml, which sits in between. A few habits keep salt pods tasting right and lasting longer.

1. Fill without overfillingLeave a small air gap at the top of the pod to help prevent leaks.
2. Let a new coil soakWait 5 to 10 minutes after filling a fresh pod so the wick is fully saturated before the first puff.
3. Use a gentle MTL drawDraw into your mouth first, then inhale, with slower and shorter puffs. Salts are made for this style.
4. Replace the pod when the taste fadesA burnt or muted taste usually means the coil is done.
