Naturally Extracted Tobacco (NET) E-Liquid, Explained

Naturally extracted tobacco, or NET, is e-liquid whose tobacco taste comes from real tobacco leaves instead of a lab-formulated tobacco flavoring. Most “tobacco flavored” e-liquid on the market works the other way around: a flavor house builds a synthetic compound designed to taste like tobacco, then blends it into a base of VG, PG, and nicotine. NET skips that step. The tobacco itself supplies the flavor, extracted rather than manufactured.

You’ll also see this called natural tobacco e-liquid, which describes the same category. Black Note pioneered naturally extracted tobacco in the US market and has made it this way since 2015, before NET was a name anyone else in the category used.

The distinction is bigger than it sounds. A synthetic tobacco flavor is built from a short list of aroma compounds chosen to mimic tobacco’s most recognizable notes. Real tobacco carries hundreds of compounds that shift with soil, curing, and blend.

Turning a tobacco leaf into e-liquid takes nine distinct steps, and skipping any one of them changes the taste. Here’s the path Black Note walks every batch through, seed to bottle.

1. Seed selection and cross-breeding. Black Note starts from non-GMO tobacco seeds, cross-bred a year ahead of planting to select the strongest varieties.
2. Growing. The tobacco is grown under conditions suited to each variety, then harvested once fully ripe.
3. Natural curing. Leaves are cured by sun, air, flue, or fire, depending on the tobacco.
4. Moistening and stripping. Cured leaves are moistened so they don’t break during handling, then stripped and sorted by grade. Only the top 50% of leaves make the cut for the next step.
5. Conditioning and aging. The selected leaves are dried again, brought to a uniform moisture level, and aged so their flavor and aroma can fully develop.
6. Blending. Leaves from different growing areas and stalk positions come together into varietal blends, Virginia, American Blend, Kentucky, and the rest.
7. Cold maceration. The blended tobacco steeps cold for six to eight weeks, drawing the leaf’s flavor into the liquid.
8. Microfiltration. The extract is microfiltered to remove impurities, leaving a clean, pure liquid.
9. Bottling. The finished e-liquid is bottled and packaged.

Seed to bottle, the full process takes up to three years.

Why cold maceration matters

Heat is fast. Cold maceration is not, and that’s the point.

Steeping tobacco cold for six to eight weeks protects the delicate flavor compounds that heat would drive off or scorch, so the extract never picks up the burnt or bitter notes a rushed process leaves behind. The same cold, slow steep also guards against harshness, which is why NET tends to feel smoother on the draw than a quick-mixed synthetic flavor. Rush that steep with heat instead of time, and you get exactly the sharp, bitter edge NET is built to avoid.
