Burley is the not-sweet tobacco.
The leaf is air-cured, hung in open barns to dry slowly with no heat and no smoke, and it comes out of the barn with very little natural sugar. Naturally extracted from that leaf, Burley tastes earthy and nutty, full-bodied but mellow, with a slightly dry finish that reads like a dry pipe or cigarette tobacco rather than a flavoring. One reviewer who ran our blends side by side called it “the least sweet, almost no sweetness”; many others say simply “not too sweet.” A few notice a faint natural sweetness on the exhale, and that is the leaf, not anything added.
Two things reviewers say most often. First, it is smooth: about one in six of the 1,018 reviews use the word, and “strong but not overpowering” is a common pairing. Second, it is the one they reach for when everything else tastes like candy. If sweet “tobacco” e-liquids put you off, start here.

Burley has a firm throat hit of its own, so if you smoked full-flavor cigarettes, 6 mg in 50VG/50PG is a common first bottle, or 20 mg salt in a pod. If you smoked lights, start at 3 mg. Burley is a full natural extract. Natural extracts leave more on a coil than a light blend does, so expect to change coils sooner than you would with Special Blend, which gets an extra purification step for exactly that reason. There are no sweeteners in Burley and the leaf itself is low in sugar, which is the part that matters most for coil life; what builds up is tobacco, not sugar. One customer who compared our blends across four tanks reports that higher wattage brings out sweetness in any tobacco, and that Burley stayed the least sweet at every power.

We steep real tobacco leaf in a cold maceration for six to eight weeks, then filter and blend it in small batches. Burley moves through the same nine steps as every Black Note blend, and from field to bottle the full process can take up to three years. Air-curing adds its own slow weeks in the barn before the leaf ever reaches us. That time, plus small-batch extraction from real leaf, is the product difference behind the price.
Burley is an American accident.
In 1864 an Ohio farmer named Webb planted Kentucky seed and got pale, almost white plants; “White Burley” cured lighter and drier than anything before it, and because the leaf is low in sugar and soaks up flavor, it became the backbone of American blend cigarettes and of countless pipe blends. Burley reached Italy in 1891 and found a home on the volcanic soil around Naples, where it is still grown. Ours is air-cured the old way, in open barns with no heat and no smoke, which is why it tastes earthy and dry instead of sweet.
