Nicotine in e-liquid is measured as milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml), with bottles commonly coming in levels of 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, 9mg, 12mg, 18mg, 20mg, 30mg, and 50mg. This tells you the amount of liquid nicotine there is in a bottle in relation to the total amount of e-liquid in the bottle.
This means that a bigger bottle of e-liquid will contain more nicotine overall than a smaller bottle with the same nicotine strength. So if you get a 15 ml bottle and a 30 ml bottle of the same strength, the 30 ml bottle will contain twice as much nicotine as the 15 ml bottle.
The nicotine is mixed throughout the bottle, so whenever you fill-up the same tank or clearomizer with an e-liquid of a specific strength, you get the same amount of nicotine. In other words, in a bottle of 12mg/ml e-liquid, every ml of e-liquid contains 12 milligrams of nicotine, mixed evenly throughout, so you get a consistent hit of nicotine with every puff.
The basic rules of e-liquid storage are that it should be kept away from light, in a cool location, and somewhere that children or pets wonโt get access to it. That is why we created cardboard tubes to give our liquid more protection.
If itโs exposed to light and air, the nicotine will oxidize and your e-liquid will get darker. This doesnโt change its core properties, but it can be easily avoided with proper storage. If you store your e-liquid in the worst way possible (near a window with the cap off) you could lose a notable amount of nicotine, but in most cases the difference is negligible.
The bigger concern for spoilage is the flavors, which will degrade more quickly in light and heat. None of this is going to do you any harm, but the flavor will be ruined.
Ideally, e-liquid should be stored in an air-tight container, but as soon as youโve had a bit of your e-liquid this is hard to achieve. Glass is better than plastic for long-term storage for this reason, though, because plastic is slightly permeable by air.
Propylene glycol (PG) is one of the main ingredients in e-liquid, and although most vapers can inhale it without a problem, it can cause an allergic reaction for a small percentage. You can rectify the issue by switching to vegetable glycerin (VG) based e-liquid.
For those sensitive to PG, the most common consequence is excessive irritation and a sore, dry throat when inhaling PG-based liquids, but in some cases, more typical allergic reactions can occur.ย These includeย sinus problems, headaches and nausea, and in some cases numbness of the face and itchy hives.
Betweenย 1.5 and 3.5 percentย of people have a contact allergy to PG (although there is some uncertainty about the precise number). In these cases, small bumps may be present around your mouth, accompanied by a burning or stinging sensation in the affected areas.
Another thing to consider, however, is that there may be some crossover between potential signs of allergies and symptoms from stopping smoking (such as โquit zitsโ), so the best way to be sure is to stop vaping or use a different e-liquid (see below) for a while to see if the symptoms clear up. If they do, then itโs likely that PG is causing your symptoms.
Finally, itโs worth noting that even vapers whoโve used PG-based liquids before without issues can develop a sensitivity later down the line โ just because youโve been OK before doesnโt mean you wonโt develop an allergy or sensitivity.
The simplest solution for vapers allergic to PG is to switch to vegetable glycerin (VG) based e-liquids, or ones with much lower amounts of PG. Although most mixers (including Black Note) use both PG and VG in their e-liquid, you can find VG-only liquids, and some mixers allow you to choose your ratio of the two. If you donโt switch to VG-only liquids, try to keep the PG content as low as possible โ 70 percent VG to 30 percent PG may be enough to minimize your symptoms, but the less PG the better.
Itโs possible to be allergic to VG too, but this is much less common and is unlikely to be an issue.

Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, known as PG and VG, are the two primary ingredients in e-liquid and the resulting vapor.
PG has the chemical name 1,2-propanediol, and is a generally recognized as safe chemical that is used in a wide range of consumer products, including pharmaceuticals, sunscreen, lotions, shampoos, food flavorings, pet foods, cosmetic creams, theatrical smoke machines and many more products. PG is also used in antifreeze, but itโs used to make the antifreeze drastically less toxic for humans and pets. In e-liquid, food grade PG is used to carry the flavor, and the fact that itโs slightlyย irritating to the throat when inhaledย means that it contributes to the โthroat hitโ of the vapor.
VG has the chemical name 1,2,3-propanetriol, and like PG, is aย generally recognized as safeย chemical used in aย multitude of consumer products, including pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics and in tobacco. As with PG, itย may be irritating when inhaled. However, in e-liquid VG produces a much smoother throat-hit, is thicker than PG and imparts more sweetness to the taste.
There is limited evidence on the safety of PG and VG for inhalation. Still, studies on those exposed to theatrical fog machines (which also use other chemicals and lower-grade PG) generally showย very little evidence of harm, withย irritation being the only notable effect. Animal studies on PG and VG have also shown no evidence of harm other than mild irritation. However, more research is needed to make any definitive statements about the risks for vapers.
The most important thing aboutย PGย andย VGย for vapers is their relative quantities used in a given e-liquid. Generally speaking, higher PG levels improve the flavor (because it doesnโt drown it out as much as VG), produce a stronger throat hit and make the liquid thinner (and therefore more efficient at wicking). On the other hand, VG-based liquids produce thicker vapor, but are more viscous, so they wonโt wick as effectively.

Typically, those who vape with a sub-ohm device prefer juice with higher vegetable glycerin (VG) to propylene glycol (PG) ratio because it produces more vapor and has less of a throat hit, enabling a longer DTL inhale.
Those using a sub-ohm device will prefer a lower strength e-liquid, typically no higher than 6mg/ml as more nicotine is delivered through the larger intake of vapor, and higher strengths will be too harsh with a sub-ohm coil.

That is because we extract the aromatic constituent of tobacco using a 100% natural cold extraction process. E-juice shelf life is generally cited as having a shelf life of one to one and a half years, but there is a fair amount of uncertainty on this topic. If you store your e-liquid properly, it can have a shelf life of up to two years.
The estimate for the e-juice expiration date is primarily based on the established shelf lives of PGย andย VG, with nicotine beingย capable of being stored indefinitelyย in proper conditions. The uncertainty comes primarily from the flavorings, which can vary from liquid to liquid. For Black Note, all of our flavors are naturally-extracted from tobacco (and peppermint, for Solo), and we donโt add any flavorings or colorings, but overall the same considerations apply to any e-liquid.
While ejuice can freeze, it has a lower freezing point than water, so frozen puddles at your feet don’t necessarily mean frozen e-liquid. Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius, while the two main components of e-liquid, Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin, freeze at -12 degrees and -17 degrees, respectively.
Due to the PG content in most eJuices, eJuice will not freeze. It will, however, get thicker, and the ingredients may separate until the eJuice is warmed-up. eJuices containing 100%VG may freeze if left outside for a while, but this does not harm the eJuice. Many people have frozen their eJuice to give it a longer shelf life without any adverse effects (although we do not recommend or endorse this practice as we believe that fresh is best for eJuice).
