Jam Monster Blackberry Review: Dark Jam, Buttered Bread

Jam Monster Blackberry is the darkest and least sweet of the berry jams, which makes it the one seasoned bakery vapers tend to settle on after starting somewhere brighter.

This is an editorial product review. It is based on the maker’s stated flavor description and the live Black Note product record. Nobody at Black Note has vaped this bottle, so you will not find tasting notes or a score below.

At a glance
Flavor Jam Monster Blackberry is sticky blackberry jam spread over buttery white toast. It is a bakery profile rather than a straight fruit or tobacco one. The jam leads on the inhale and the buttered toast arrives on the exhale.
Formats A 100mL freebase bottle at 75VG/25PG, and a 30mL salt nicotine bottle at 50VG/50PG.
Strengths 3mg and 6mg in the 100mL freebase. 24mg and 48mg in the 30mL salt nicotine.
Best device fit The 30mL salt bottle suits a mouth-to-lung pod. The 100mL freebase suits a restricted direct-lung sub-ohm coil.
Sweetness Our judgment, not a measurement: sweet, with the buttered toast the only thing balancing it.
Coil behavior Sweetened bakery blends are the hardest category on coils. A general statement about the category, not a test of this bottle.
Bottom line The connoisseur's pick of the jams, and the best of the nine if you want to taste the toast.

Who this is for

You will get on with it if you like dark berries and you want the bakery half of the blend to actually register. It also suits anyone who finds the strawberry and grape bottles too sweet to run all day.

Skip it if you want something bright and obvious. Blackberry is the most restrained of the nine, and restraint is not what everyone wants from a dessert.

One thing worth knowing: Dark berry blends discolour a coil faster than they taste worse, so a wick that has gone brown here is not necessarily spent. Judge by flavor rather than by looking at it.

What it tastes like

Blackberry is a deeper fruit than strawberry or raspberry and it shows. There is a wine-like quality to it, slightly tart underneath the sugar, and the jam reads thick rather than syrupy. It is the closest thing in this line to a preserve you would actually spread.

Because the fruit is less sugary, the butter has room to show. That makes this the bottle where the toast is easiest to find, and it is why people who say they cannot taste the bread in Jam Monster are usually told to try this one.

Retailer descriptions agree on the order: blackberry jam first, buttered white toast second. The word that comes up most is sticky, which matches how thick the jam reads.

We have not tasted this bottle, so treat the description above as a reading of the maker’s own wording rather than our tasting notes.

Formats, strengths and what to pick

The 100mL freebase bottle is mixed at 75VG/25PG. That is a vapor-forward ratio suited to sub-ohm tanks, box mods and coils rated under 1.0 ohm. On a jam and toast blend the high VG does real work: it gives the butter and bread notes enough body to sit under the jam instead of disappearing behind it.

The 30mL salt nicotine bottle is mixed at 50VG/50PG. The balanced ratio is thinner, so it feeds small pod coils without starving them, and the extra PG sharpens the jam. The trade is that the toast reads fainter in a 50/50 pod than it does in a 75VG tank, which is the biggest difference between the two formats here.

The more vapor your device makes per puff, the lower the strength you want. If you are between two strengths, go down rather than up: a strength that is slightly too low is a minor annoyance, and one that is too high will put you off the bottle entirely.

If you are moving away from cigarettes and unsure where to start, the vape quiz covers strength and device together in about a minute.

Device fit and settings

Match the format to the hardware. This is the single most common mistake made with a 100mL bottle.

For the 30mL salt version at 50VG/50PG, use a mouth-to-lung pod with a coil around 1.0 to 1.2 ohm. The tighter draw concentrates the blend and the 50/50 mix wicks fast enough that you will not chase dry hits. The Black Note Pod System is our own refillable and is built around 50/50 liquids. The Uwell Caliburn G3 Pro adds adjustable airflow, which is the main lever on how sweet this reads, and the Vaporesso XROS 6 Mini is the steadier choice for all-day carry.

For the 100mL freebase version at 75VG/25PG, go sub-ohm. A restricted direct-lung coil around 0.6 ohm suits this better than a wide-open cloud setup, because big airflow thins the jam out. The Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 handles 75VG without a full tank setup, and the Geekvape Aegis Solo 3 is the one to pick if flavor matters more to you than pocket size.

Blackberry holds up to a little more power than the lighter fruits, because the tartness survives heat better than delicate sweetness does. Even so, the butter is the ceiling. When the exhale turns sharp instead of rounded, you have gone two watts too far.

Opening the airflow thins the jam and pushes the blend toward a generic sweet fruit; closing it down concentrates the bakery side and warms the draw. On this family, err toward a tighter airflow than you would use for a plain fruit. The toast is the part you lose first.

Prime a new coil properly by wetting the exposed cotton, filling, then leaving it five to ten minutes before the first pull. At 75VG the liquid moves slowly, and not waiting is the most common way to ruin a coil on day one.

Coil life and care

This is where a jam and toast blend costs you. Sweetened bakery e-liquids are the hardest category on coils, because sugar and the bread and butter notes both caramelize onto hot wire. Dark jam builds visible residue quickly. Coil life is mid-range for this family, and the wick will look worse than it tastes for a while before it actually goes. Expect noticeably shorter coil life than a fruit blend, and plan on it rather than being surprised by it. This is a general statement about sweetened bakery e-liquid; we have not tested coil life on this bottle.

Three things genuinely help: run at the lower end of your coil’s range, avoid chain pulls that let the wick run dry, and rinse a pod between refills when switching flavors. Mesh coils outlast round wire here.

If coil cost is the thing that bothers you, that is a real argument for an unsweetened blend rather than something to work around. Black Note Special Blend and Special Blend 3.0 are naturally extracted tobacco e-liquids made without added sweeteners.

Alternatives in the range and beyond

Against Custard Monster Blackberry, the fruit is the same and the base is the whole difference. Toast gives you bread and butter with a dry finish; custard gives you cream and a rounder, heavier one. Running the two back to back is the quickest way to work out which base you actually prefer, and that answer applies across both lines.

Within the Jam Monster line, Blueberry is the nearest neighbour and slightly sweeter, Black Cherry is tangier, and Mixed Berry includes blackberry but dilutes it with two lighter fruits.

Custard Monster Blackberry is the same fruit on a cream base instead of toast, which is the cleanest way to see what the bakery half is contributing.

Fruit Monster Mixed Berry is blackberry among three other berries with no bakery at all, useful as a lighter daytime bottle.

Verdict

The connoisseur’s pick of the jams, and the best of the nine if you want to taste the toast. Keep the power moderate and let the tartness do the work it is there to do.

Both formats sit on the same page, so you can pick the bottle that matches your device rather than buying twice. Shop Jam Monster Blackberry at Black Note.

Frequently asked questions

Jam Monster Blackberry is sticky blackberry jam spread over buttery white toast. It is a bakery profile rather than a straight fruit or tobacco one. The jam leads on the inhale and the buttered toast arrives on the exhale. We have not tasted it; that is the maker's description as carried on our product page.

They are different bottles for different devices. The 100mL freebase is 75VG/25PG in 3mg and 6mg, made for sub-ohm tanks and box mods. The 30mL salt nicotine is 50VG/50PG in 24mg and 48mg, made for pods and low-wattage devices. Salt nicotine stays smoother at high strength, which is why the pod format carries the bigger numbers.

Four strengths across two formats. The 100mL freebase comes in 3mg and 6mg, which suits sub-ohm tanks where each puff delivers more vapor. The 30mL salt nicotine comes in 24mg and 48mg, which suits pod systems where the puff is smaller. If you are between two strengths, go down rather than up.

Sweetened bakery blends are the hardest category on coils. A general statement about the category, not a test of this bottle. Running at the lower end of your coil's range and avoiding chain pulls both help. We have not measured coil life on this bottle, so treat that as general guidance rather than a test result.
