Custard Monster Strawberry Review: Strawberries and Cream

You will get on with it if you want something uncomplicated. Strawberries and cream is a flavor nobody needs explained, and this executes it without trying to be clever about it. Good first custard, and the easiest of the seven to hand to someone else.

Skip it if you want depth or contrast. This is the most conventional bottle here, and if you have vaped strawberry cream liquids before, this will not change your mind about the category.

One thing worth knowing: Strawberry is the flavor most often lost to a tired coil. It is a delicate fruit and it goes before the cream does, so if the bottle starts tasting like plain custard, change the coil before you blame the liquid.

Ripe strawberry folded through whipped custard. The custard here reads lighter than in the berry bottles, closer to whipped cream than to a set custard, which suits the fruit. Strawberry is a pale, sweet berry without much acidity, so the base is doing more work than it does behind blueberry. The 100mL freebase bottle is mixed at 75VG/25PG. That ratio favors vapor production and a softer throat hit, which suits sub-ohm tanks, box mods and coils rated under 1.0 ohm. The thicker mix wicks slowly, so give a fresh coil a minute to saturate before the first pull.

The 30mL salt nicotine bottle is mixed at 50VG/50PG. The balanced ratio is thinner, so it feeds small pod coils without starving them, and the extra PG carries the custard base more directly than a high-VG mix does.

The more vapor your device makes per puff, the lower the strength you want. If you are between two strengths, go down rather than up: a strength that is slightly too low is a minor annoyance, and one that is too high will put you off the bottle entirely.

Match the format to the hardware. This is the single most common mistake made with a 100mL bottle.

Run this lower than you would run the berry bottles. Strawberry is the most heat-sensitive fruit in the range and thins out quickly, leaving you with whipped custard and not much else. The bottom third of your coil’s range is usually where it sits best.

Close the airflow down further than you would for a fruit bottle: a tighter draw concentrates the cream, while wide-open airflow spreads it thin and the custard starts reading as generic sweetness.

Prime a new coil properly by wetting the exposed cotton, filling, then leaving it five to ten minutes before the first pull. At 75VG the liquid moves slowly, and not waiting is the most common way to ruin a coil on day one.

Sweetened custards are the most demanding e-liquid category on coils. Sweeteners caramelize on hot wire and a cream base leaves residue of its own, so both mechanisms work against you at once. Strawberry is mid-range for a custard on coil life, though the flavor will fade before the coil actually fails. Coils darkening within a few days of regular use is this category behaving normally rather than a fault with the liquid or the hardware. This is a general statement about dessert e-liquid; we have not tested coil life on this bottle.

Three things genuinely help: run at the lower end of your coil’s range, avoid chain pulls that let the wick run dry, and rinse a pod between refills when switching flavors. Mesh coils outlast round wire here because the heat spreads across a wider surface.
