What is nicotine

What Is Nicotine?

Tobacco first arrived in Europe in the sixteenth century through the exploring prowess of Christopher Columbus but it wasn’t until the early nineteenth century that nicotine entered into our vocabulary.  It is a chemical compound that is present in all tobacco smoke and a primary ingredient in e-liquids. Did you know that nicotine is actually a completely natural chemical that fulfills a vital biological function in plants? Despite its uncomfortable association with tobacco it is only a small part of cigarettes and the argument can be made that stigmatizing it is simply unfair.

Natural Chemical

Nicotine is actually a naturally occurring chemical in plants and is used as a natural insect repellent. Nicotine is exceptionally harmful to insects; if they eat plants that contain it they will die within a matter of seconds. For this reason, synthetic nicotine compounds have been used in insecticides since the 1960s and are often blamed for the sharp reduction in bee numbers since this period.

Nicotine can be absorbed into the body in a number of different ways. By smoking it is absorbed through the air sacs in your lungs. Chewing tobacco means that nicotine is absorbed through the mouth but nicotine can also be absorbed through the skin, which is why nicotine patches have traditionally been seen as an effective way to quit smoking. No matter how this chemical is absorbed into the bloodstream it will have the same effect.

Receptors targeted by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine are all over the body. They are in everything from muscles to adrenal glands and all major organs. Acetylcholine helps maintain a healthy heart function, respiration, muscle movement and cognitive functions like memory.

Nicotine has a similar structure to this important neurotransmitter, meaning it can activate the same receptors. However, nicotine also disrupts the normal functions of the brain as the receptors change as you become a regular smoker. Regular use means you develop an increased tolerance which means you need to increase the amount of nicotine consumed in order to experience the same effect. Once your brain has adapted to nicotine it needs it to maintain normal functions like memory and movement. If the level of nicotine drastically reduces, the smoker can experience withdrawal symptoms that take time to go away.

Is Nicotine Harmful?

Large doses of nicotine can be fatal and because it can be absorbed in so many different ways it can be very dangerous. That’s why you should always keep products containing nicotine out of the reach of children and in tightly sealed containers. Although, in small doses it is not harmful whatsoever and it in its self is not carcinogenic. Cigarettes cause cancer because of the other compounds within them. Things like tar and carbon monoxide are the harmful chemicals that cause the most damage to the human body. This does not mean that nicotine is fundamentally a good thing, the way in which it alters brain chemistry is a worrying effect and often irreversible.

Give Nicotine Up?

If you ask any smoker on the street if they would like to quit smoking, they will almost certainly always answer with a resounding yes. Because of alterations in the brain this can be a lot harder than any smoker initially imagines. As we know nicotine in itself is not fundamentally harmful a lot of smokers use nicotine based aids to give up the far more dangerous tobacco. Quitting aids like nicotine patches and gum have been around for a long time and they have had some successes in helping smokers quit.

An e-cigarette provides the user with a hit of nicotine but none of the other dangerous chemicals that are present in tobacco smoke. The action of smoking is something that a lot of smokers struggle to get past with other quitting solutions. Whereas with an e-cigarette there is still a regular ritual that will stop the smoker from picking up a carton and lighting up.
