Virginia tobacco was discovered accidentally in 1839 when a slave named Stephen in Virginia fell asleep while overseeing the fires used to dry the harvested tobacco. The flare-up of the fires created a sudden drying heat that fixed a bright yellow color onto the leaf, accompanied by a sweet smell of caramelized sugar. This accidental discovery became a massive success, especially among French women who had just started smoking at the time. Its popularity continued to grow, making Virginia tobacco one of the most common tobaccos in the world today.
